Ammakkilikoodu (Review)
Topic started by WC (@ 202.88.233.34) on Wed Nov 26 11:51:16 EST 2003.
All times in EST +10:30 for IST.
I feel good tonight; for once, it felt nice to be in the theatre, after a disappointing Onam, a few months back.
Should admit that I was in two minds, even as my friends stood in the not-so-long queue to get the tickets for the show. No regrets though, that I ventured bravely into the hall. After that mish-mash Mizhi Randilum, Ranjith has a relatively taut script in his hands , this time round. Easily drawing fine performances from his lead cast, the debutante director takes us on a two-and-a-half hour journey of emotions, but sans the melodrama and shrieks and wails. Even the romantic element b/n the leading pair is underplayed, so much so, that it lingers somewhere in the background, adding to that feel-good atmosphere maintained through out. Which is perhaps why, the climax appears a bit too ordinary, and as a notch down from the rest of the movie. But we forgive that, and a few other scenes [ like the Prithvi-Navya song & Prithvi's kidney business!! :-) that badly needed an adamant editor], with willing magnanimity, since at the end of it all, one feels GOOD, one feels Human.
After that over-the-board perfrmance in Swapnakoodu, Prithvi is reminiscent of his Nandanam role in AKK. Maybe it takes Ranjith to bring out the best in him. He's immensely adorable, and thankfully, doesnt shout from the rooftops. Navya is competent in a role that demands a mature performance, and breezes through the role with elan. As for the Mother cast - lets cut it short and conclude that they are Brilliant!!
AKK is no masterpiece; not even Ranjith's finest work till date. However, after a long winter of duds and artistic nonsense, one feels its spring time again. Hence its relevance. Lets then keep our fingers crossed and look forward to better times and better films !!
:-)

Dont know why malayalam film goers doesnt accept good/experimental films. I am talking abt Mullavalli and Ammakkilikoodu.
Forget about HHPHA, war and love and nalamathe veedu, we all know that they are crap.
If Ammakkilikkodu continues its dismal run(as given in the report) then Renjith also may go back to Narasimham/RavanaPrabhu sort of movies.

ammakkilikkoodu nalla cinema aayirikkaam (I have not seen).............pakshe ee vanna kaalathu nammude naattile yuvaakkal theatril poyirunnu sentiments kaanumennu thonnunnundo?.......prathiakichum orukoottam praayam chenna sthreekal abhinayikkunna cinemayil....avarkku vendathu, adipoli action cinemayo, allenkil nalla comedy cinemayo matto aanu
so ranjith may have to turn again for an action type movie like devasuram or aaraam thampuran to revive his image (but not narasimham)

Its sad if there comes a point when the so-called "Yuvaakkal" find sense only in two brands of movies - action & comedy. And its not as if AKK is some tear-jerker devoid of any kind of light-hearted entertainment. There are several moments in the film that brings a smile (at least) to ones lips!I hope Renjith continues to write sense, irrespective of AKK's fate at the Boxoffice. Coz he's one of the few writers we have, who cud save us from the CIDs and Balettans.

hi WC
since last 5-8 years I have not seen any variety movie from mallucini (from commercial side).....Though I have not seen ranjith's nandanam, its story tells the mix of some previous movies.......His araam thampraaan also does n't have any variety........As far as I am concerned so far his masterpiece is devasuram...
though his scripts shows some variety, how long he will continue with flops....Hellow is his new movie and I expect something new, but if it does n't have anything to cheer up the audience definitely that also will become flop.........
our audience has changed lot

Yep Thom, even I heard of Mohan's claim that Nandanam is inspired by his Ilakkangal. I happened to catch up with the latter film recently while it was aired on one of the channels. Except that theres thread-thin similarity b/n the female protaganists, I cudnt see what Mohan was crowing abt. Maybe there was some likeness b/n the two that I missed! However, as far as I cud see, Nandanam was inspired by Ilakkangal, as much as Schindler's List has been inspired by War & Love! ;-)

BTW, NF yaar, did u hear this newsbit abt Navya singing a song for a film titled "Katha Parayum Theuvoram"? And that she's acting opposite Dhanush in Balu Mahendra's next Tamil flick after Julie Ganapathy?
I have this feeling that the girl debuting in Satyan Anthinkkad's "Manassinakkare", Nayantara is going to make it BIG here. She looks hmmmmm....;-)

Heard a first hand report of War & Love from a bunch of friends who were unlucky viewers of the non-entertainer. As expected the "Vinayan" touch has been maintained thru' out,and the result is reported to be quite nauseating. I sincerely wish the guy wud take a sabbatical from making movies for some time, and give the audience a much needed DAMN break!

Jibzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!! :-) Wow..its so niceeee to seee u back yaar!! After such a long time. I thought u might have left, or taken a break from the forum. Am glad that I cud correspond with u again! :-)
Yep.. even I heard of AdbhuthaVilakku. Might be interesting, and I feel even Pattanathil Sundaran might be good. Somehow I dont have much hopes for Vajram, going by the looks of the movie, and the story line. CBI 3 might be Mammootty's next hit, I feel. One film of his that I was looking forward to was Viswathulasi costarring Nandita Das, which shows no sign of a release, though! :-(
NF dear.. u got a point there yaar! :-)
BTW, Jibzz, NF, is there anyway we cud keep in touch, even outside this forum? :-?

It is a nice movie. Worth watching but not for youths who don't prefer sentimental touch.
