Indians are notoriously saddled with diabetes. Is it a genetic predisposition or something that can be controlled. In any case according to the latest BBC report at http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/health/newsid_1156000/1156218.stm
very soon one out of every five diabetes patient in the world will be an Indian. One of the negative consequences of rising income levels is that most people immedietely go for lots of food, especially western food, containing sugar. The physical exercise among Indians is abysmally low. These factors combine to make many Indians have diabetes by the time they are 40.
What steps can be taken by PRIVATE initiatives and public authorities to contain the rising tide of diabetes in India?

I would like to know if diabetes is hereditary. My mother is diabetic. Though she has reasonably managed to control it through strict diet it still poses a problem once in a while. She does not take insulin. what are the other natural methods of controlling diabetes (i.e. without resorting to intense allopathic medecine)?
Please advise

It is hereditary but does not mean you will get it but have to take some precaustions with respect to food and exercise even if you dont have it now.

For a good (modern) understanding of diabetes, please take a look at http://www.diabetes.org/ . for keeping diabetes under control take a look at http://www.diabetes.org/nutrition/ and especially the FAQs in that page. seems like regular exercising and moderation in food consumption are the key ammunition against diabetes.

Hello,
I am Graduate student at the University of Tennesee, USA. I am writing a paper on Type II Diabetes that compares the demographics, treatments, and public policies of the United States with those of India.
Would anyone in this forum have a few moments to answer some questions concerning these issues?
If so, please replay to bkadas@utk.edu

Diabetes is heriditary. Measures can be taken to prevent it.
Consumption of bitter gourd juice in empty stomach in early morning would go a long way in prevention and cure.
Also avoid strain and stress.
Avoid as much as possible, choclates , sweets, mangoes and the like esp in empty stomach.
PPl suffering from low sugar, should always have a piece or two of toffee for emergency.

I am basically repeating what i wrote in Indian food thread. Diabetes in India is rising mainly due to use of polished rice and wheat. Once this was called rich man's disease because those days only rich could afford to spend money for extra polishing of rice and wheat. Diabetes is wrongly propogated as herditary by western doctors and scientist. Yes there are cases where it is herditary and not all cases. My mom is diabeteic because of the isde effects of steroid usage for asthma in young age. She tried all means and now she is with me in usa (iasked her to stop listening to doctors suggested diets and follow more of our traditional diets pattern). Now she is in usa and with making her to eat more of unpolished rice and wheat and using all varities of vegetables and fruits, her sugar levels are reaching normal values.

Pradheep,
I also read a study by some nature food group which pointed towards lack of fiberes in our food as the main cause towards diabetes.
I also read that a Nature cure hospital near coimbatore has reversed cases by merely increasing the fibre content in the food.
Kaikuthal arisi(unpolished rice) , luckily is nowadays available in many stores.Earlier , i have taken only once , this rice in the Thiruparai thurai ashram near Tiruchi. They still use kaikuthal arisi for hostel students and for the inmates of the madam.
Ragi or kezhvaraghu contains large portion of fibres and we all can atleast include in occasionally in our menu.
Taking fibre rich vegetables also would help.

Stop eating all root vegetables if you do not want to become diabetic. Potatoes are the worst root vegetable and is the main cause of diabetes. Follow a Hindu diet and remain healthy.

Guys:
Are you all talking about Diabetes 1 or 2??
Diabetes 1 (insulin Dependent- IDDM) is hereditory and it can affect a child even..
Now Diabetes 2 (NIDDM - Non insulin dependent Diabetes Milletus) is to some extent hereditory if you are not following healthy life style and it affects people aged 30 and above. D 2 is preventable (eventhough your parents had) by life style changes. The risk factors that must be controlled are:
1. eat a lot of fruits and vegetable and fibres;
2. Do not smoke
3. Drink less alochol
4. Physical activity is important atleast walk for one hour daily.
5. Your BMI (Body mass index = wt/ht ) must be less than 25.
6. Less fat and sugar intake.
7. Less stress and avoid tension.
Bitter gourd is not yet proved to be a cure...
Diabetes 2 can lead to kidney failure, heart attack and stroke...if one has hypertension and type 2 diabetes they have 60-80% chances for getting all these diseases.
Have a healthy life style!!!!

############### TRUE HINDU ##############
ARYAN means noble, and true deeper meaning 'follower of vedic life'.....
*****************************************
there are two types as well.....
there is the above version and then there is the European version based on the followers of the GREEK philosopher ARIUS who are known as ARIANS.
************************************************
who would believe that the English went to ROME and gave them LATIN?
NO ONE.....
In the same way who would believe that GRAND DAUGHTERS give birth to their GRAND MOTHERS?
NO ONE.........
my point being that no one would believe that the languages that have been influenced by the roots, to be the ones to have influenced the roots aswell.....
meaning that from the roots comes a TRUNK, then the base of the tree, and then from there onwards are branches, which then in turn produce smaller branches and leaves......
and possibly fruits............
SANSKRIT being the roots cannot have been influenced by the very branches it has created...
70 words for water, each originally being SANKSRIT and NOT DERIVED from anyOTHER language which then amalgamate and MULTIPLY into another 280 different words when added with a PREFIX.....
the fruits can be the languages we have today if we learn to ACTIVATE the languages.....
thus meaning to carry out the actions on the words we speak......
the other main reason why they couldn't have come from Europe is because the
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0 only arrived here in the west in the 8th century
and even with the sun and the moon in their posession, along with the 0 for about 7 centuries they announced that the world was FLAT!!!!!!
this is no offence to my DRUID cousinz......
who were also followers of the ARYA faith......

Indians use too much coconut in cooking, very high in colesterol -- then not too many can afford olive oil. Not good for dabetic people.
The other porblem is that we Indians are so customed to eat rice often which is high in starch, just the same as white flour fo roti. The effect of this is worse for vegetarians not getting a good source of protein in their diets. Many do not bother to take time to sort out good peas and beans as good substitutes.
