Without reservation, I can say that Bulghakov's THE MASTER AND MARGARITA is the most brilliant prose work (and perhaps, poetical work as well) of all time.
Simply try to best this most intellectual, understandable, entertaining, visual, etheral, grounded, optimism based on negativity work of ART.
(By the way, Gogol doesn't count)

i read bulgakov's master and margarita. what a masterpiece! all the qualites lily b. attributed to this novel (intellectual, entertaining, ...) are true. OH! how much i would love to make a movie of this book. especially "satan's great ball" set to "danse macabre" of saint saens! delightful delightful. (it's so vivid, i could hear the music while reading those pages!!) beg borrow (but donot steal, the master doesn't like thieves and the corrupted :-) ), read this book.
please don't ask me what the novel was about! :-)). all i know is that it makes alice in wonderland (which i couldn't read to completion... it was boring :-) ) look like a child's play :-)

THE MASTER AND MARGARET is not just a masterpiece but a simphony! A fairy-tale for adults that resembles nothing else among the world literature. Poor Bulghakov, poor genius ... The Soviet false smashed him, playing blind for Bulghakov's sting wich pops up from any page, from any line. So the book's magic rests in the background. R.I.P. I deeply baw to you, Slavic genius!

It has been a while (30 odd years since I read the book. All of a sudden it has become the greatest novel ever written. I will reread it, as I am to lead a discussion of the work next January. I would like to locate some critical work on Bulghakov, maybe his biography, or other recommended reading. Would appreciate any hints.
