Nobody surpassed Chandler in PI tales

Hi readers,
I am a big fan of Raymond Chandler. After reading him, I find it hard to read any other mystery novels, in particular private eye tales.
Nobody surpassed him in both P.I. tales or even in mystery. What do you think?

Sherlock Holmes in the original, unabridged form, is unsurpassable. Anyone who can pick up on the reference to "street arabs" knows what I mean - there are things in the unabridged you'll never find, in, say, an American version. Anyway, the unabridged SH is over 1000 pages long, and ranges from myth to epic to mystery, mixed in with touches of grandiosity and British sarcasm. Reading Holmes is a timeless intellectual tradition that will never wear out.

I find it pointless to discuss with anyone who claims that something or someone hasn't been surpassed. Especially in literature which should be an all inclusive field, why are we still injecting the comparison mentality? Why should someone be compared to Chandler or some other P.I. to Chandler's P.I.?
Another irksome thing about such "unsurpassed" claims is that the claim is hard to back up with evidence of having read everything else on the planet that has to do with mysteries and P.I. characters.
I'm not a mystery/P.I. genre buff, but I have read some fabulous stuff from people as varied as Walter Mosley and Haruki Murakami. If one isn't so inclined to celebrating one's own experience as the best, there's a wealth of stuff out there to savor.

Udhaya:
What is your opinion of Sherlock Holmes? He may not be the best, but he's sure among the best.
