Dear Friends,
In your opinion, which is the best mystery / detective novel ever written in the English Language?
My vote goes to the "Hound of the Baskervilles" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

I assume you mean 'originally written in the English language', which is a shame because Umberto Eco's "Name of the Rose" would have to be excluded from your consideration. While I like and admire (most of) Conan Doyle's Holmes canon I must say Agatha Christie rather eclipses Doyle in most respects. "The Hound" is a fine book (heavy on atmosphere) but so is Christie's "Death on the Nile". My personal favorite though, excluding Eco's works, is "The Bridge of Birds" by Barry Hughart. Its publishers list it as 'fantasy' (it's actually historical/mythological fiction) but it is above all an excellent mystery, and I encourage you to read it if you haven't done so.

Hound of the Baskerwilles of course is excellent mystery, with good help from the supernatural and the geographical peculiarities of northern England(the moor, prehistoric caves etc). As for confusion and complexity of plot my vote goes for 'Murder in the Rue Morgue' and 'The Purloined Letter' both by Edgar Allan Poe. These two because they belong to the category of novelettes. If we include short stories as well, I feel many by Agatha Christie will offer good competition. Another one I especially liked is 'The exploits in the cave of Ali Baba' by Dorothy L.Sayers.

I'm still trying to locate Mr. Ions. Replies from York University, The Economist, authors, writers and mystery writers associations had no information of either Edmund S. Ions or Edmund Aubrey.
