i'm a film student in london england. i'm doing a big essay on whether Satyajit Ray is a local Bengali film maker or an international 'art house' film maker. any thoughts wwould be greatfully recieved.

Well, I think both are correct. Films like the Trilogy can I guess be viewed as International..
At the same time there are films that are rooted in the culture of Calcutta in the early 70s(Seemabaddha, Jana Aranya..) while films like Jalsaghar etc. are too Bengali in my mind...
The children's films are pretty "local" in there flavour... haven't become very popular in the rest of India
