It's very sad to see that Rajinikanth is often seen as a star, not an actor. Personally I think he is a hell of a good actor. Witness his performance in earlier K. Balachander features like Apoorva Raganghal, Mundru Mudichu, Avargal, and the far superior Tappu Thalangal. His versatility extended in the action arena (countless of films during the early days), and he found his forte in comedy (though Thambikku Entha Ooru and Thillu Mullu are credited as his earlier foray in comedy, one should be reminded of his performance in Ninaithale Innikum).

Films such as Buvana Oru Kelvikuri, Aval Appadithan (his performance was the only reason this movie worth watching), Arilirunthu Arubathu Varai, Mullum Malarum, Johnny, Sri Ragavendra (a lesson on Subtlety), Engeyo Ketta Kural, Puthya Kavithai and so on so forth. Even in his masala movies, we get to see glimpses of his good performance. Take Badshah, Annamalai, Veera and even Padaiyappa. While most of the scenes are your run of the mill typical Rajini scenes, there are some which required precisely the kind of energy and force this wonderful actor posseses.

Coming to the point, I feel he is largely an underated actor. Its time that we give the correct recognition - that Rajinikanth is a good actor, rather than merely a star. What do you think about this?
