Everyone knows that Sivaji's Paasa Malar and Rajini's Mullum Malarum are the only movies which have given good impact for brother sister sentiment. No other films can be compared for this subject.
Let's talk about and compare the both films (Paasa Malar & Mullum Malarum) in terms of acting, story, screenplay, acting, music, sentiments, etc.
Overall which one is the best. Which film will be remembered for long time. Is there any other movies which can be compared with Paasa Malar and Mullum Malarum for sister & brother affection?

Ooops!!! Too many 'really's. Let me fix it before the "Shakespeare" arrives here ;-)))
*you will realize that MGR is really finding really hard time when he really has to ACT and EXPRESS his feelings in his FACE.*
Should read as "you will realize that MGR is finding hard time when he really has to ACT and EXPRESS his feelings in his FACE"

GOT IT FROM ILLAYARAJA YAHOO FAN GROUP.
"All medias praised Mullum Malarum as 'This is the film, which proves Cinema is a Visual Medium'" -- From the book "Cinema'vum Naanum" by Mahendran.
For a best film, 'Wat the film is abt' shud be told within 5 to 10 min from the start of the film. In the very first scene itself Mahendran told 'Its a film abt Annan-Thangachi paasam' (Brother-Sister Love), even without dialogues.

"When Venu Chettiar(Producer) asked to direct the film, I told tat I could tell the single line of story... Its a story abt brother-sister love. He didnt allow me tell anything more than this abt the story and asked me to start the work. He might have thought 'Mahendran Periya aal... Chummavey avaru Dialogues'la pichu udharuvaaru. So, innoru Paasa Malar ready'nnu ninaichuruppar. But, myself only knows, its entirely different from Paasa Malar" -- From the book "Cinema'vum Naanum"
This was one of the best film which evokes the best acting talent of Rajni. (After KB?) Some eg: When Rajni came to home, after he threw away the tiffin box brought by his Sister Shoba. She was trying to console him n asked him to come for dinner. Rajni sed "Vara maatten..poa"

Shoba told abt Jeyalaxmi as "Paavam'nnan. Romba veguli". Rajni replied "Eppadi..eppadi? Neeye veguli...Neenga avalai solreengala?"
While threatening Sarath babu or Somebody else Rajni sed "Ketta paya sir.. kaali"
And, Shoba... Anything I want to tell abt her acting?? And..Sarath Babu as well.
"For a film, Story shud be the hero" -- From the book Cinemaa'vum Naanum
This might be the 2nd film, in which Rajni acts as a Hero.(The 1st one is Sathurangam??) But u cant say anywhere, Rajni as Hero. In every frame, one cud c Mahendran n his script as Hero. Some of the script beauties....

While Shoba n frenz saw Sarath Babu's Jeep n got into it, shoba told "Naan thaan driver. Nee TICKET'u" But, while Sarath Babu came and asked them "Eppadi... Neenga thaan driver'aa?" Turned to some other "Neenga thaan CONDUCTOR'aa?" ie: He was an educated person. But, as village ppl, Shoba cud think Conductor as 'a Ticket'.
While driving the jeep,(b4 Sarath came) Shoba saw the mirror. She shouted with exitement "Aii...Kannaadi" ie: Eventhou thr were lot of new things to c in a jeep, village gals always like to see their faces(Alangaaram)'na??

The song...Senthaazham Poovil... The song starts like .. Sarath babu started singing... But, while the song ends like.. Shoba walking along in a garden in an evening... ie: Even after the song, it echoes in her ears.
While Sarath Babu was throwing 'Pori' to fishes, Shoba saw him. And she like to talk to him. But her 'Vetkam' stopped her. So, she started talking with hesitation. Wat a showing of love man!!
While Rajni was in hospital after a lorry ran over his hand, Shoba didnt know wat was really happening for Rajni. She wanted to go n c Rajni. She was telling this in a 'Vayalvarappu'. And, the nxt day Rajni came with the lose of one hand. The backround of the scene was 'Mul chedi'. Thou this techniq was the oldest one, Mullum Malarum came in the yr 1978(77?)

While Sarath Babu asked Rajni's permission, for his marriage with Shoba, Rajni asked him to come the nxt day. The nxt day, he didnt decide wat to do, even after Sarath Babu came. But, the only thing he had in his mind was "Taking revenge". After Sarath came, Rajni thought for sometime n went to one person around him n asked him "Kanna, Veettukku pola". Then he went to Venniraadai Moorthy n asked him to marry his sister. If u notice this correctly, b4 asking "Kanna, veettuuku pola", he tried to change wat he wud hav asked. ie: At first, he decided tat he wanted to give his sister to tat Kannan. But, he changed his thought. So, he asked something unnecessary then decided to ask Vennira Aadai.
"The cameraman for this film didnt co-operative with us. At tat time, Kamal told me tat thr was one wonderful photographer, whose taste was also like me. And so, v found a classic photographer, BaluMahendra" -- From the book "Cinema'vum Naanum"

Truly, BaluMahendra came with the best photography in the best film. One of the best eg is... Adi Penney song... While singing the song, Shoba was in very enthusiatic mood. So, the camera showed "swaying trees, fast-running water, flowers" (Later this techniq adopted by BharathiRaja in many films) This even brings happiness inside us.
In the title card, it showed like "This film was picturised in ORWO Color"... ??
"...so tat v selected him. And I need wonderful Re-recording for this film. And, since I knew IR personally, I knew he had those guts. This film was the first one which showed IR's Re-reco talent to the world" -- From the book "Cinemaa'vum Naanum"

As usual, the songs were big hits. And very less instruments were used. In "Maan Inamey"(The song mentioned by CSR), IR used Urumi and Morcing(spelling?) only. In the interlude only, some more instruments were used. And in "Nitham Nitham Nelluchoru" song, IR used only Gadam n Morcing for the whole song. He brilliantly handled the interludes with 'No sounds'.
When Rajni first saw Jeyalaxmi in front of his house, wat a fantastic music!! Tat one even played with 'kottankuchi'.
And, lot of 'Tharkuripperta Ani' here in the film.
"After seeing double positive, b4 post production n re-reco, Venu chettiar thalai'la adichuttey vanthaar. 'Enna padam eduthu vachu irukka? Oru dialogue illa... Pochu..ellam naasama pochu'nnu sollittu poittaar" -- From the book "Cinemaa'vum Naanum"

So, here v cud realise the strength of IR all over the film.
3 different tunes had been used. One for Rajni-Shoba, tat Maan Inamey tune. One for Rajni-Sarath, some pathattamaana tune, mostly Violin. One for Sarath-Shoba, I donno the instrument. It gave me a feeling like Jalatharangam. And, it remembered tat Puthiya Vaarppugal Bakiaraj-Rathi meeting... (laa lala lalalaa...laalaalalaa)
While Shoba asked Rajni 'Annan, avanga pakkathu veettulaiye thangikattum'. Rajni was thinking for a while. So, Shoba again 'Naamalum indha oorukku yezhaigalaa thaana vanthom?' Then, the camera moved to Rajni n IR played Man Inamey tune, depicting... Rajni thoughts went back to his early days. And this same techniq used when Sarath came to Rajni's home asking for Shoba. Tat Sarath-Shoba combination bit was played.

When Sarath came to the office first time, he was questionining Rajni continuously. Rajni saw Sarath with a feeling 'who is this guy?' Tat feeling was given by the music. Having 4 strokes of keys(Piano??)
Venniraadai had illegal contact with one woman, Angaayi. When she came, he was in his shop. He asked 'Yenna, sowkkiyamaa?' Then a 'Jalra' music started. He started to close his shop. ie: Angaayee aatti vacha padi aadurathu, simply Jalra adikkirathu.
In the 2nd half, after Rajni lost his hands, mostly Shanoi was played, If I correctly identified the instrument. Shanoi is usually played for sad situations, Right??
And, one more thing flashed in my mind. I am not very sure abt this. In most of film, whenever somebody meets, the instruments count was equal to the persons count. ie: If 2 were meeting, 2 instruments were playing.. If some 3rd person joined in the gang then 3rd instrument started etc. But, anyway I am not sure abt this. I noticed this in 4 or 5 scenes.

And, as usual, the very sensitive Climax scene...!! Rajni didnt like Sarath. So, he cudnt give Shoba within 2 min. But, see the transitions... The words by Mahendran made all of us to accept the climax. ('Enakku ongalai pidikkalai. Aana en thangachikku ungalai pidichurukku. Aanaa unga ellaathaiyum vida naan thaan mukkiyam nirubichittaa paatheengalla. Andha perumailayum, karvathulaiyum naan ippo oru kaariyam panna poren....')
Actually, the beauty lies in the Title itself. It gives the meaning Mullum Malarum(Thorn(Kaali - Rajni) and Flower(Valli - Shoba)). And, Thorn also Blossoms. B4 reading his book I thought Mahendran had these two things in mind. But, he cleared tat the film was named to give the 2nd meaning only.(ie: Thorn also blossoms)

I presonally feel that Mahendran is one great director who didn't get his due recognition, whereas Dirs like(though not worst in my opinion) who use a theatrical way of making films with irritating Roll-call like character intros et al crowned the mega-titles like 'Iyakunar sigaram' etc, etc, etc.
Mahendran brought in subtle poetic narration.Whether it's his evergreat 'Udhiri pookal' or 'Johny',Metti...the man was truly a master. We lost him anyway now.BTW who can anyway forget Maestro's evergreen Johny theme,a haunting tune,(which is used by SunTV news Sirappu paarvai, whenever the topic is a bit pathos in nature) anyway end digressing abt IR.
Thanks for the wonderful post yet again. The different meaning to the title(Thorn also blossoms)..it's great insight.I haven't thought so till now.
