I read in a book that as a result of many people wanting different films to watch...kamal has decided to stick to 2 films in a year in which he will risks his life to do roles that are different from current love stories etc....As a result one film we have just watched is Aalavanthaan...the next will be Robot..which will take some time to be made..

Guys,
When Rajini remakes movies from Hindi- THE PRODUCER PAYS FOR THE STORY RIGHTS. IF YOU SEE THE TITLES THERE WILL BE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT MADE TO THE HINDI PRODUCER for legally remaking the movie. Verify each and every movie and correct me If I am wrong
BUT if you think kamal is doing the same- take a walk.He shamelessely says that the ideas are his.Even today he will say that Avaishanmugai, SatiLeelavathi, Magalair Mattum etc etc etc( I can list atleast 15 movies which are direct lifts from English) stories are his brain child. I still remember him saying that Avaishanmugai had no connection with Mrs Doubtfire
Copying from a Hollywood movie is not a crime. Do not BLOW YOUR TRUMPET SAYING THAT YOU CREATED THAT IDEA and your a savior to tamilcinema blah blah That is why Kamal is getting so much shit
BTW- Even Chandiyar story is not original accoording to the latest JV. There will be no smoke without fire guys

unmai,
Maybe, and maybe not. I respect Rajini and think he's a fine actor. But did you know that 'Arunachalam' is based on 'Brewster's Millions'? Was there acknowledgement or payment for story rights?
'Thalapathy' was an excellent film, but ws based on 'Karnan' (or the Mahabaratha). Any acknowledgement/payment?
Borrowing story lines have been rampant in the Indian film industry, but it's the audeience who choose to highlight some, but ignore others.

Kumar,
I talked about Hindi movies. I know that Arunachalam is based on Brewster Millions and Dhalapathi based loosely on Karna. What I said applies for 80% of movies of Rajini made from other languages. There might be a few exceptions here and there as mentioned by you
But thalivar doesnot open his mouth like the intellectual Kamal and proclaim that the idea is his. It is matter of time before Kamal faces the same fate like Karishma Kapoor who has been sued by a foreigner for stealing her story

Unmaivirumbi,
Adapting story lines without acknowledging/paying source from either Hindi/English or any other language should'nt be any different. Although I dont condone Kamal's actions of claiming originality, any or everybody indulging in lifting without respecting copyrights should meet the same fate (liable to be sued or prosecuted). This is regardless of whether one talks about it or not. Personally, I've enjoyed Kamal and Rajini movies remakes or otherwise - didn't quite matter where the source was from.
If the issue were lifting or lifting without ack., I just dont think Kamal is on one side and rest on the other! You might have opened a can of worms here.

I agree with Rudra. If lifting is the issue, then there are more movie makers involved in this than we think. If Kamal claims it's an original idea and that is deemed wrong, then the other film makers who lift stories, but remain silent by NOT acknowledging it's original source are just the same.
And people take the extra step when it comes to Kamal movies; even before they are released, people speculate and start to imagine it's Hollywood source. Before Thenali came out, people were saying it's a copy of Mousehunt because of a still shot of Kamal and a rat. Thenali turned out to be based on 'What About Bob'. Then when still shots of Aalavanthaan was released, people said it was going to be a copy of Terminator (because Kamal bulked up) or Green Mile (because the bald Kamal was behind bars). The comparisons have become ridiculous to the point that people were crying 'copy' just because a few movie scenes from Kamal films reminded them of scenes from from Hollywood films.
Right now rumours are spreading that Chandiyar is based on 'Gangs of New York'. The only thing flawed in this comparison is that the announcment of the making of Chandiyar came well before 'Gangs of NY' was released. How does one copy a film that hasn't been released yet?
