I am deeply affected by the tragedy in Kumbakonam and pray for the lost young kids
May their souls rest in peace.
Why do we never learn from tragedies. Just this year there was a fire tragedy in Srirangam
Life is sometimes so cheap in India especially for the poor

My hearty condolences to those who have lost their kids in the tragedy.
It's time govt takes serious actions against the schools which violate safety rules, today's issue of The Hindu says that according eye-witnesses,the teachers escaped as soon as the fire caught on,What a humanity these men and women have,in contrast a mason Ranjith Kumar has got serious injuries in his process of saving the children and has died in the hospital, let's salute the brave manson.

My deepest condolences to the families who lost their children. It's always a great heart wrenching tragedy whe people lose their lives for no reason- especially children.
May their souls rest in peace.

It's unimaginable and breaks my heart to think what the kids must have gone through during their final minutes. This is so sad. Also, imagine the plight of their parents. Sometimes life is so cruel.
My friend witnessed a similar fire accident Trichy in a marriage hall right across the temple. Many people including the groom and his grandfather died in that accident. That accident occurred because of fire from kitchen and lot of people died because of stampede as the marriage hall was not built to government codes.

It's so sad, that I can't really discribe it in words, and I can't believe that the teacher ran out and left the young kids in the building!!!!

There were 24 teachers in the school according to the report, they could very well minimised the loss,if they had that human heart to do it.But running like cowards shows they are no better than a normal selfish creatures. This is a country where a teacher is given the priority than the almighty.
The teacher is not only responsible for the students' academic works, but also is fully responsible the students' well-being and safety when they are in the school premises. If that is not ,then what's the point in calling them as teachers and that place as school.
The incident has much more to be derived, awareness needs to be instilled in the minds of ppl too.
Pulling down thatched roofs and closing such schools is noway a solution,a thorough analysis involving many factors should be taken up,and a long time solution must be found out.
Any such ideas....pls

:-)
we have specifications mentioned for building a school and i dont think 80% of schools meet those specification.
tathced roof are always insecure and everbody knows it. we always realise only after losing. if the realisation after the loss happens once or twice it is okay but the sad thing is it happens everytime.

A periodic auidt has to be carried out every year in all schools. Replacing the thatched roof with concrete alone is not the solution. Schools & institutions have to be equipped with fire extinguishers & emergency exits.
Another sitting duck are the cinema theatres. Most of the theatres do not have adequate safety measures. It is a place crammed with nearly 1000 people. Imagine if a fire occurs! The tragic fire accident in a delhi theatre is still fresh in our meneory.
The politicians should come out with constructive suggestions to prevent similar tragedies in future, instead of simplying giving messages, blaming bureaucrats & announcing solatium.

How can you expect the teachers to lose their lives for the sake of the children?????They are clever indeed and so they escaped leaving the children indside the classroom.

Govt can stop issuing licenses to the public buildings if they have thatched roofs or sidings, they did similar things to the tent theatres in smaller towns and villages like 20 yrs ago, all those theaters which had thatched roofs had to replace with asbestos or other nonflammable roofs.

Shilpa,
U have a point there. However, U cannot totally blame them either. They might not have known the enormity of the fire & also the first reaction of any person would be to save himself. Teachers are no exception. Also, these days what respect does a teacher command? Their own students make fun of them.
I am not justifying their action, but then we should also see the other side of the picture.

Anand ,seeing the other side of the picture is right, but here in this case NONE of the so-called teachers have done their duty, actually it's not a teachers' duty ,but a human duty to try to save the lives in danger.
But one can't blame them entirely, first of all that place can't be called as a school at all, rather it's just a 'Teaching shop',so obviously the teachers are none but ppl having completed their degress or just higher secondary education who take teaching as a convenient job or a time pass to make money.

Thamizhan,
Not to sound rude, but this sort of things happens all the time. How can you blame the teachers? Did they kill the children? No they just tried to save their own lives and the children unfortunately died... The theachers didn't kill them so don't blame them. You should rather go out and blame the evil people who kill, rape and burn children alive all around the world instead of sitting in front of a stupid TV and watch some stupid "romantic" movie...
