Last Saturday, i saw Kamal's Sivappu Rojakal in Singapore Vasamtham Central. I have seen this movie several times and it is still so attractive.
I am amazed that this type of classic thriller movie was released in 70's and i also appreciate the audience in 70's to make this movie a silver jubilee.
Illayaraja's background music and two memorable songs are wonderful. Bharthiraja proved that he can also direct a thriller movie with great qualities. Even now, most of them will appreciate this movie.
Query:
The story of this film is from any novel?
Which released first? Hindi or Tamil?
Please give us more info about this film, also compare the qualities of Tamil and Hindi version (Red Rose), etc

FilmFan,
Silver jublee means flop?
shadotcom,
thanks for the thread.I also watched it in vasantham central.I think the story written by Bhagyaraj. Not only this ,most of the earlier bharathiraja movies, story written by bhagyaraj, even Oru kaithiyin diary written by bhagyaraj and he directed the hindi version.
I also amazed how it became super hit in those days.I think this movies must be a entirely different one from other movies of that time.Apart from this ,as you said great music by mastreo Ilayaraja .I heared once many made fun on bharathiraja that he is only fit for only village movies and love stories .Then he decided to prove he is able to take a city subject also.So he took this movie as a challenge and he succeed. But he miserably failed in another movie 'Tik Tik tik'.

Milton,
I think Filmfan is trying to say that Tamil version released first and the Hindi version flopped.

I wanted to ask you one question. Who is the better film personality overall. You should consider every aspect of the cinema . Sivaji or Kamal?

Milkilo,
very good question.
There is a difference between kamal and sivaji.
Though kamal is a great actor ,he has allready proved he has telents in every field in filmography .He has done coreography, clasical dance, story writing ,screen play writing ,Song Lyrics writing ,Directing a movie ,Producing movie, sing songs etc etc .
In every field he proved he is above average and in acting and directing he is marvelous .
Sivaji is not multitalented like kamal .But sivaji is incomparable in acting only .For me if there is one person who is authority for acting ,that is sivaji.
But as a film personality kamal is incomparable mastering almost all departments .
It is like comparing K.J jesudass and S.P .balasubramaniyam .In melody and classical KJ is KING .Even though SPB cannot go that level in melody and classical (He also proved he is excellent in melody also) ,SPB is known for versatile ,suit for any kind of songs .Though no body can match KJ in one area ,overall I am SPB fan
Like wise Sivaji (Oh! Himalaya in acting) ,but Kamal is the best overall film personality.

But considering only acting ,if you want me to pick a single ,undoubtfully it is Nadigar Thilagam

Sigappu Rojakkal is inspired by a English movie
Hitchkocks "Pshycho". At the same time two movies based on Pshycho were released. They were Balumahendra's "Mudu Pani" and "Sigappu Rojakal".
When we watch both the movies Sigappu Rojakal excelled in Quality and Acting. Kamal acting was Excellent and Direction and BackGround music was Superb. This is a Silver Jubilee movie. The Hindi version by Rajesh Khanna was a Flop. Rajesh Khanna admitted that he cannot give a performane like.

Creativity and Originality is the plus point of Shivaji when compared with Kamal.

sigappu rojakkal was released on diwaali day 1978. this was barathiraaja's 3 rd film after 16V and kirakke pokum rail. the film was not inspired by psycho (moodu pani was). the inspiration was a film called wicked wicked. the hindi version ,also by barathi raja, was released in 1981 starring rajesh khanna.
was sigappu rojakkal shown on the big screen recently!! in singapore? do they show old films on screen there? i wish i could see old films or even new tamil films on the big screen.

Sigappu rojakkal was way too head of its time (even for now it is ahead). If you get chance to watch it, notice how Kamal's finale performance(I think in the jail) of the movie show traces of Guna character.

Arvind,
Atlast Sridevi finds out that Kamal is killing all the females for satisfying his father, showing the videos to him in a secret room at the outhouse. She runs for her life and escapes!
The film was not so good but was a new concept in the Tamil screen when it released. But I remember every youth in those days were copying Kamal's hairstyle, coolers and bell-bottoms. When you go out for a walk in Chennai those days, you can see every third 20-year old guy trying to look like SivappuRojakkal Kamal!

I did see the end.But it was lil ambiguous.
Does kamal really love shridevi, cause he writes her name in the wall?
Does it mean he is undergoing a treatment and would soon be okei?
Was kamal convicted for the murders?
So many questions unanswered. More like an english movie where the end is left to ur imagination.
like "poove poochooda va"
If u have postive thinking, then u would land up imagining a happy end for the story.
I also imagine happy end for
'Moondram pirai'
(I mean shridevi would obviously come to know thro others n friends, she was not well, would search back her days, and find him....and get married.....well why not???
alls well that ends well!)
lol
