Alaipayuthe, Jayam, Parthipan Kanavu are listed in Best romantic films of Tamil. Do you agree?

I don't think these three are good enough to be listed with the best.

They've left out...Roja, Bombay, Poove Unakkagha, Thullatha Manamum Thullum, Sethu, Vedham, Kathal Kondane, Minnale, Run, Thaalam...

What is Your views...

Here is the list...

Alaikal Oyvathillai

This early 80’s Bharathiraaja classic, set near the Kanyakumari coast, showcased the love between a Christian girl and a Hindu boy. The debutant actors Karthik and Radha did a fantastic job and both later became big stars. What worked in favour of this love story was its soul stirring music by Ilayaraja and the fresh theme.

Punnagai Mannan

Directed by K.Balachander Punnagai Mannan starred Kamalhassan, Revathy, and Rekha in lead roles. One of the highlights of the film is the music - somgs like Enna satham intha neram. Great picturisation, great lyrics, and absolutely awesome tunes by Ilayaraja. Kamal was the real Kathal Mannan during those days and the amount of creativity he could bring to a love song was unbelievable.

Ninaithale Inikkum

Great movie with a young Kamal and Rajni romancing with debutant Jaya Prada all over Singapore directed by K.Balachandar. All the songs tuned by MS Viswanathan were so peppy, youthful and exuberant.

Oru Thalai Raagam

A landmark film in Tamil in the year 1979. It marked the beginning of the youth brigade from Adayar Film Institute led by director/story writer T.Rajendran, cameraman Robert Rajasekhar and producer Rowther. The film had mind-blowing music by Rajendran. It ran for 400 days continuously at Alankar theatre (now defunct) on Mount Road in the then Madras. It also introduced a couple of new stars and was said to be the first campus love story in Tamil.

Kathalikku Mariyathai

This film throws light on what exactly love is! It is not eloping, committing suicide or hurting one’s own parents but giving respect to love anyone and moving on in life. Director Fazil’s remake from a Malayalam hit, Kathalikku Mariyathai was an excellent love story with an amazing twist in the climax. It was one of Vijay’s biggest hits ever and the movie made him a superstar. It was Shalini’s introductory film in Tamil and Ilayaraja made a successful comeback to films after a few years of hibernation.

Kathal Kottai

This film was innovative as the love between the lead pair was established in a different way. They never saw each other till the climax, which later became the source material for many films that followed. Ajit and Devayani became big stars with this film. The songs of Deva were very popular.

Kizhakke Pokum Rail

This Bharthiraaja classic portrayed love between a simple guy and a village girl played by Sudhakar and Radhika set in beautiful rural locations with train as the backdrop. The song Poovara Sambu Poothachu was a big hit in the film.

Nenjil Oru Aalayam

Muthuraman, Kalyan Kumar and Devika starred in the 1965 C.V.Sridhar classic that was later remade in to Hindi as Dil Ek Mandir and also into all regional languages.

Chinna Thampi

P.Vasu directed Prabhu- Kushboo run-of-the-mill commercial film released in 1991, went on to become one of the biggest musical hits ever in Tamil films.

Moonram Pirai

The highlights of this film released in 1982 were Kamal and Sridevi's acting, the story, locations and music. It was later remade into Hindi as Sadma.

Alaipayuthe

Mani Ratnam’s reality meets romance in this delightful film examining the universal theme of love and loss. Is love really enough? Do people change once they get married? Issues like this are touched upon in Alaipayuthe. Although the idea is a highly simple one, the treatment was sensitive and real. The lead pair Madhavan and Shalini was superb. Alaipayuthe wasn’t path breaking nor highly original but it made you leave the cinema hall with a smile on your face.

Mounaragam

A Mani Ratnam classic that had Mohan and Revathi playing husband and wife. Karthik played Revathy’s lover, a happy-go-lucky guy who dies in an accident. The film is considered one of the classic love stories of Tamil.

Parthipan Kanavu

The Sneha-Srikant pair clicked in this love story, directed by Palani. Vidyasagar’s music and Sneha’s dual role became the talk of the town and the film was a hit.

Bharathi Kanamma

A morbid love story of a dalit servant falling in love with his upper caste master’s daughter. Parthipan and Meena played the lead and the climax was too disturbing as both dies in the climax.

Jayam

A remake from Telugu with the same title was directed by M Raja and had Ravi and Sada in the lead. It was a hit with good music, village backdrop and top class performance from artists.
