hello friends,
we all know that rajini's 'baba' was a washout!!though,before it released,many films were put on hold in fear of the competition..quite a few of the ones released after 'baba' came out as winners inspite of the wait.this shows that a film runs only if 'something' appeals to the audience...it is not a specific formula nor a superstar cast..neither is it that only 'good' films run.here is a list of films that made it at the BO from release of 'baba' till date.
1.run
2.villain
3.ramana
4.dhool..apparently already declared a super duper hit!
5.bagawati & solla maranda kadai,apparently recovered costs.
6.dunno yet about anbe sivam & vaseegara.

while seemingly 'good' films like 'ivan','virumbugiren','mounam pesiyadu'..didn't create any fire at the BO...
what do u think is the story?

  formula....these days
  
  1. songs with good beat, and words which mean very close to flirting with opposite sex (run-teradiveediyil...etc)
  
  2. image of the hero, to be protected in same way
  
  lets take case to case examples
  
  rajni.........macho man image. he should show 'I am unbeatable' kinda image, if he portrays something magical or philosophical, he looses. ex. baba
  
  madhavan......romantic hero with flashing smile, even if the story is 200 percent dumb the movie will be a hit, cause of his prime looks! ex. run
  
  lesson to learn....ppl wanna see their hero with the same image.They cant accept different approach
  
  3. looks are very very important. hero should look pleasing and young.
  
  ex. ivan flopped cause parhiban is not young anymore! Did he not have great story?...but what the heck, ppl dont see all that!
  
  4. comedy scenes which mocks either politicians or ppl or religion
  
  well the trend is like that
  
  5. 6 to 7 scenes where hero talks with full fervour and patriotism, about how bad the govt is, how lots of social problems rule the world etc. (WEll kinda creates social awareness u c)

  Currently, there are only two ways of ensuring success for a film; one by taking a masala film and the other an erotic film (eg. Dhanush movies).
  
  Only these kinda movies hit the box office big time.
  
  Audience don't appreciate good script these days.

  formula is always changing i suppose...and nowadays i think the trend is to make violent and sexy movies..like virumaandi, kaadal kondaen etc..i year back, it was police stories all over. from saamy to kaake kaake to anjaneya...now that has changed also..in one year time only!!so, we can expect changing formula for every year
