Hey! Ram - Kamal Haasan’s brilliant debut
Ratings: *** Timepass
Cast: : Kamal Haasan, Shah Rukh Khan, Vasundara Das & Rani Mukherjee
Music: : Illayaraja
Director: : Kamal Haasan
When the film Chachi 420 was left halfway through the directorial mantle fell on Kamal Haasan and it was reluctant man in the director’s chair but when he donned it willing for Marudanayakam he found fate playing a cruel trick with the project getting stalled for several reasons. Now with all that vengeance he has done a fine job in Hey Ram as a director and actor and a good singer too proving once again that he is a Sakalavallan (Master of all arts).
The film starts in the pre independence era at Karachi where he, Shah Rukh Khan and Gaurav Shukla are working in an archeological outfit run by a British officer. Married to a Bengali (Rani Mukherji) in Calcutta despite his orthodox Brahmin parent’s objections he meets with the wrath of communal violence in Calcutta. His own Muslim workers beat him up and rape his wife and slash her throat. With his wife dead he turns into a Muslim hater and killer. His meeting further fuels his anger towards Muslim’s with an RSS activist Atul Kulkarni. Back in Manargudi he goes through the motions of a marriage with Vasundhara Das a young girl from his community.
He takes off to Pune where he meets an ex Rajah (now in Independent India) and his RSS activists. Here he and Atul are selected for the job of murdering Gandhi because they feel that Gandhiji’s policy of appeasement of Muslim community in the name of secularism has given shape to militancy of the minority community. Just when his marital relationship with his young wife is fine and she is pregnant the telegram comes asking him to come to Delhi to finish his job since Gandhiji is camping in Birla House. He takes off from his home for Delhi and he plots to kill Mahatma. However an accidental mistake where his gun gets hidden in a soda bottle carrying truck leads him to the Muslims area and he meets Shah Rukh now a migrant from Karachi. The soda manufacturer a Muslim takes Kamal Haasan to be an Hindu coming to shoot down Muslims and want to kill him but Shah Rukh saves his old pal. In between the running between alleys and muslim attackers Shah Ruche tries to change Kaman’s mind from his anti Muslim thought but in vain. When finally the Hindus are after Shah Rukh’s blood its Kamal who steps in to save his friend by gunning down the Hindu activists. A badly injured Shah Rukh (hit by Hindu activists) is carried to the soda factory and here Kamal Haasan fights shoulder to shoulder with Muslim activists against the Hindu gunmen who are attacking the factory. Inside the factory are the women, which includes the wife and children of Shah Rukh. Kamal Haasan holds to look up to. Seeing the futility of his anti Muslim stance he drops his plans to kill Gandhiji but Godse strikes and he has now only the Mahatma’s slippers and glasses for memory.
The strength of the screenplay comes from the effective use of flashbacks. Kamal Haasan is a frail old man on the respirator and his grandson and doctor friend are trying to save him. They take him in an ambulance and on the way cops tell them that it is December 6 and riots will break out. Like wise riots break out and the ambulance caught between rioters is asked by cops to stop and take the old man and get into a ditch and hide. The gunshots outside starts off yet another reminisces of the old man who finally never comes out alive.
Some of the most powerful dialogues ever in celluloid are found in Hey Ram. It drives home the thoughts of Muslim fanatics, Hindu activists and those who are peace lovers. When Shah Rukh breathing his last in the hospital is asked by police as to whether he can recognize the Hindu fanatic who came with a gun to the alley and started off the riot (meaning Kamal Haasan) and Shah Rukh looking straight into the eyes of Kamal Haasan says I can never recognize that beast but I know only my Ram. At another point Kamal Haasan asks Shah Rukh as to why he opted for India and not Jinnah’s Pakistan he replies that when Jinnah’s daughter opted for India and why should not he a son of Gandhi. When rioters break out into arson on Independence Day and communal riots spark out the glaring similarity is brought out when in modern India December 6 becomes a day that everyone fears.
In recent times no movie has ever brought out the futility of communal violence in a better way and it puts forth both the communities point effectively and ends up with the message that the senseless killings gets you no where. Shah Rukh as the full blooded Pathan argues for sanity the direct reaches out to the Hindu and Muslim masses. Kamal has an as the husband and the man with the mission excels, the erotic scenes, the sensuous woman in his life all add to the films entertainment value. Thiru’s camerawork, brilliant recording score by Illayaraja, sound recordings are at its best by Srivatsava and needless to say the team work between Sarika and Saboo Cyril on costumes and art department has produced a fine film.

I'll tell you why "Hey, Ram!" failed: it was an egoistic film made to quench the thirst of a self-involved actor. "Vanapastham" by Shaji N. Karun and starring the vastly superior Mohanlal dwarfed the quality of Kamal Hassan's self-conscious effort. That's why it won best film, and Mohanlal won best actor.

In Ashwin's post, the review speaks of brilliant directorial debut, strong screenplay, excellent dialogues, pheneomenal acting, strongest message, etc.. on and on..
But the rating seems to be 3 stars and "Timepass"
Can somebody explain what is the meaning of this contradictory post..???

Rakesh, Dont get me wrong. Iam a ardent fan of both Kamal and Mohanlal. Both are terrific actors. In terms of doing complicated roles no one is better than Kamal.

THe reason may be becoz of all the controversy it had created. So the Govt would have thought that it would be safe if it does award the best movie to Hey Ram.

Hey ram was brilliantly directed but it was dwarfed by kamal's excessive narcissism & explicit kissing scenes (totally unnecessary to the main theme).

Hey Kamalfan,
Do you know the correct meaning for the word narcissism? How do you relate Kamal to narcissism? I'm sorry to say, your postings about Kamal have never made any sense. All you have got to contribute to this forum is a "Kamal bash" in all the threads. Your postings are pretty biased and your way of spreading anti-Kamal agitation will never work. I really feel sorry for you. Please stop your exercise in futility. Thanks!

kavitha,
U want to know the meaning of the word narcissism. Then see Hey Ram. Every frame, is is kamal & kamal only. As Rakesh has rightly pointed out, Hey Ram is an egoistic film made to quench the thirst of a self-involved actor.
Also, the totally unnecessary excessive kissing & butt biting (rani mukherjee was admitted to hospital & had to take 24 injections on her butt)
sequences marred the film.
Kamal should give more importance to the script than to his role alone.

If you want narcissism, watch T.Rajendran's earlier films.
Hey Ram was about the life journey of Saket Ram; how else can you make a film about a man apart from focusing on the man himself.
I guess unlike other movies, Hey Ram does not have the mandatory meaningless comedy sketches in between scenes; instead we see a detailed stroy of one man's life during the struggle for independence.

This accusation of 'narcissism' reminds me of one film critic's view that in Richard Attenbrough's 'Gandhi', the other characters were reduced to 'stick figures' and Gandhi dominated the movie.
Of course, you dill!! That's why the movie was called "Gandhi", NOT "The Adventures of Gandhi, Nehru, Patel & Jinnah".
"""Kamal should give more importance to the script than to his role alone."""
I respect your view, kfan. But I aso feel that the script DID take importance. The other characters came across very strongly as well- even the 'minor' characters (eg Om Puri had a short, but memorable role).

I thought that Hey Ram was a phenominal movie, Everything that was said by Shree Ram Abhyankar was amazing. Those Dialouges is what I would call Adhiradi Vasanam. The Direction was Great! The Music (including backround score) were mindblowing! The story, even though it had a couple flaws towards the end, was great also. The people who don't like Hey Ram, have the kind of taste, where they like the hero to run around trees for duets, and say punch dialoughs like "Annyayam panna andavanukku pudikathu, Asingama pesuna entha Arul ku pudikathu."
Bottom Line: Hey Ram! A Must see movie for atleast Abyankar's sake, if not for Kamal's flawless acting and good story.
