Does any actor know the meaning of "underplaying a role"?

Why is that our makkal only respond to melodrama in movies? Can anyone please point out performances by actors where they have underplayed their roles and become as effective?

I am not criticising Sivaji here, because I am of the opinion that he being a stage actor found it difficult to break out of loud dialogue delivery and animated acting. But even Sivaji struck gold in "Muthal Mariyaathai", where he gave an extremely down to earth performance without resorting to his usual outbursts and what not! At the same time, I guess he had to be loud to be effective in a role like Veera Pandia Kattabomman.
Even a forcibly stereo-typed actor like Rajini was able to underplay his role in Johnny and get away with it and the credit definitely goes to Mahendran.
Kamal Haasan is a capable actor, but I find his acting style monotonous and his acting in so many scenes have become predictable. And I pray to God that he does not have another 'crying scene' in Hey Ram. But I guess thats asking for too much! :)
I hope to come up with some more examples of "underplayed roles" when I think of it!

cool
unnal mudiyum thambi does have one such scene (the old dude that waters plants dies and kamal does something that comes naturally to him)
nammavar is an ozhungumuthu role lifted directly from "to sir with love"
now varumayi.... - that is a good movie
1) Vijayan in one Mahendran movie (the one that has a song called azhagiya kanne) gave an amazingly restrained performance
2) Rajini's performance in Johnny (another Mahendran movie) was low key

Sivaji has always under-played where necessary, even in old films. He is one man who really knows his job.
But other Tamil artistes are not far behind. We normally tend to notice and discuss the main stars of the movies only. We have a fleet of extrodinarily skilled character artistses - Manorama, Nagesh, SriVidya, Radharavi (very graceful guy), Nassar, Vadivukkarasi, S.N.Lakshmi (she was incredible in MMKR) - the list is too long, whose talents are never sung. There is this young man, Karan, who is shaping very well too.
Urvashi is another one who is brilliant - underplaying or overplaying - her timing is near perfect.
