KAMAL HAASAN, A PHENOMENEON IN HIMSELF needs no introduction all over india. in fact he was the first(and perhaps the only) actor who is saleable in all the 25 states of the country. the very thought that a single actor can try innovations tageted at the elite population all over the country ,thus compensating for the loss of his local front bench audiences , as a way of compensating the profits is his brainchild.

there is no need to describe his achivements as an actor or as a behind the screen performer, those who accept his greatness in his chosen field have accepted that already and those who deny that are cheating themselves.

what is of concern is that in the past 20 yrs since kamal started delivering new and different projects, tamil field hashas earned a good reputation in the indian film sector in terms of class, and no need to say abt the neighbours' envy. now a critical time is reached when the old warhorse seems a little worn out and some filthy attacks had made it more vulnerable. does this eventually stimulates his retirement soon, will tha tamil film industry be able to compensate for the loss?

i think, if he is made to retire, that will be a severe blow to tamil film industry. the following are the reasons:
1. he is the best recognised tamil actor all over india.

2. he has created a trend in recovering over half the production costs thru the hindi distributuin rights which makes a good insulation for the local distributers. it will be years for that trend to encompass the films of the younger generation actors, and if he exits soon, that trend might die.

3. he is an actor of his own class, and is the best hero in terms of acting whole of india (Mohanlal is a close competitor, of course).the guys from the other state have much respect for tamil cinema ONLY because of kamalhasan.

4. his versatility is unparelleled throughout india.

5. if he makes a premature exit, only the self promoting half-boileds like vijayakanth, vijay, and ajit are going to occupy the screen for the rest of the decade, which will be a nightmare for the tamilians to go to theatres.

6. the next close contenders,in terms of performance, Vikram in particular and perhaps Madhavan too, are at least a decade away from filling his vacant slot and good movies will become a rarity.

7. even shankar, maniratnam and co who make good movies are facing flops, and shankar is trying to compensate by directing a half boiled romance story, good quality films will become a rarity after kamal haasan's exit.
sure. bala makes good movies but he would deliver only one in two years.

for all these reasons i think we cannot afford to lose kamal hassan in the next five years. what do the others think ?
intimate.
