ANBE SIVAM, A critic's delight
Film: ANBE SIVAM
Cast: Kamalhasan, Madhavan, Nazer, Kiran Rathod
Music: Vidyasagar
Producer: Laxmi Movie Makers
Director: Sunder C.
Some films may not go well with regular audience but they are treat watch for avid film lovers. Like KANNATHIL MUTTAMITTAL, Kamal's new film ANBE SIVAM is good and praise worthy film. Though it has regular commercial elements, the film attracts only class audience. In HEY RAM Kamal was with Hindutva brigade, this time in this film he is pro-left. Though the film has so many scenes, which the average filmgoer cannot easily grasp, it also suffers with lack of clear idea. The film criss crosses between serious theme and mass presentation.
Here we have Nallasivam ( Kamalhasan), a communist and trade union leader and Anbarasu (Madhavan), an ad film maker, a globalised Pepsi-cola guy. The two of them meet in Bhuvaneshwar while traveling to Chennai.
During their journey, Kamal narrates his past. Kamal Hassan plays the role of a folk artiste (Theru Koothu), who stages street-plays to fight against an arrogant factory owner, played by Nasser. In due course, Kamal falls in love with Nasser's daughter Kiran. Meanwhile, Kamal escapes a mishap but loses his limb. From then on, he devotes his time for workers and fights for their rights. And in the end he sacrifices his love.
The film has so many praise worthy aspects. Kamal's acting is sheer joy. His make-up as a man, who lost his limbs in an accident and with scared-face, is amazing. And Madhavan with his usual energy stands up to Kamal in acting. Kiran Rathod, who till now has played only glamorous roles comes up with decent performance in this film. Arthur Wilson's camera work, M. Prabhakaran's impressive art, particularly the accident site set and Sai Suresh's apt editing are the other commendable aspects of the film. Vidyasagar has risen high with this film.

Review
"Anbe Sivam" is an appropriately titled story of Nalla Sivam (Kamal Haasan), an idealist, social activist and communist and Anbarasu (Madhavan), a savvy ad film maker who is back in India to get married to Kiran. Anbarasu meets Nalla at the Bhubaneswar airport on a rainy night and fate holds the blabbermouth Nalla as his travel companion all the way till Chennai for the next three days. They clash with each other over their differing ideologies.
Nalla recaps his days when he was a theater activist opposed to capitalism. His employer (Nasser), a capitalist and exploiter becomes his villain. The villain's daughter in course of time falls for Nalla and they are set out to get married. On the way Nalla meets with an accident, loses his leg and his face is disfigured. When Nalla recovers and comes back in search for his beloved, he is told that she is married. The villain convinces his daughter that Nalla is dead and arranges for her wedding
By the time, Nalla and Anbarasu reach Chennai, they become buddies and Anbarasu invites Nalla to his wedding. The shocking discovery about the bride at the wedding and how things are set right is the rest of the story.
Madan's dialogue sparks the screen. Kamal's versatility has been showcased again with a new look for the film with a broken face split right in the middle, soda bottle glasses and broken tooth! Madhavan has towered in his role of a fussy and self-centered man. His presence is breezy and enlivens the screen. The female lead is played by Kiran, who exposes herself as an actress. The supporting cast has Nasser, Yuhi Sethu, Santhana Bharati, Uma, Madan, Vishwanath, and 'Pasi' Sathya.
Though the typical Tamil movie characters such as a bad rich man, his good kind daughter, poor boy rich girl romance exists, the film has been treated differently. Those who wail about flimsy film plots and formula fare, in all fairness ought to encourage laudable ventures such as these.

Kamal's next project is apparently
'Chandier' starring of course the Great One himself and Satyaraj and Nasser, as the three Chandier (meaning goons or chendai artists, I am not sure).
The music is said to be by Raja. If this is true, we can expect another attempt at a classic by the duo a la Hey Ram.
The production is said to be by Raj Kamal and Kamal is slated to direct this venture.
All of the above according to Sify.
