Guys, listen to 'Deep Forest', a collection of 'African Chants'. It is the fountainhead for so many songs of Rehman. I remember one on top of my mind, that is the starting tune of "Thillana Thillana" and there is one more that resembles "Anjali Anjali".. Rehman excels in the art of "Imaginative Imitation". Someone must order a CBI raid to look into his collection of CDs. But the 'Maestro' himself, is not a non-stealer himself. After all, Music is Business... ain't it ?

mr alex
my opinion still stands. i ve never said ARR is the greatest but his service to tamil film is to remove two of the greatest all time bores,in relation to that only i quote he is the no 1 music director in india as on today. moreover IT is not that IR has tried his hands in hindi films i f i remember correct abt 7 films and all box inside hits. and by the by since u say u r a malayali there is no antagonism for hindi in ur place so i humble request u to hear the golden greats of 50s to 70 of hindi film music of naushad, s.d. burman, salil chaudry, madan mohan ,shankar jaikishen, and even the 2nd line music directors like khayyam, ravi, chitragupt etc. yes taste differ from person to person. but the hype for IR is overboard. even during thes periods in tamil music directors like G.Ramanathan, a.m. raja has given great music . in my opinion before all these great people he is a pale shadow only. and th hype is only in tamilnadu. that is wat is my contention. incidentally AR has never boasted that his music is thenral. even in his recent interview in times of india he has praised IR. and wat i meant by dabbangoothu may be a little harsh one i apologise for that. because one cursory glance of vijayalakshmi navaneetham krishnan's work will reveal about the 39 ragas. i hope u understAND MY POINT. thanks

dear mahalingam,
thank u so much for the response.
again u r saying about box inside hits .. pl. understand one thing. if a film has not done well, the defect is not of the MD. I know many great MD s here in kerala also who are not getting even a single film for showing their capability . what u r saying is correct. IR could not do many hits in Hindi . If u sit and think peacefully, u can understand why. You also made a statement that in kerala ,, there is no antagonism for hindi. u mean that we people are not listening hindi songs?? pl. see that all over India , people are listening Hindi songs. why are these hindi songs , even the bad ones are gaining this much popularity? is it because they are such great songs?? No, No, just because people all over the country are forced to listen those through Doordarshan and other channels. Can u deny the fact that ARR won this much fame and credit after he entered Hindi film industry. If he remained in Tamil itself, he would not surely have become the no. 1 in the country ( see that i am also admitting that he is now the no.1)
But , what surprises me is that people like u are thinking Hindi Film Industry to be the greatest . See the posting from MALISUG who says about SUPPAN KUPPAN from south and ELITES from north. I am sad to see u also repeating the same . It shows the inferiority complex some of the south Indians have . That is why North Indians look down upon us. Pl. don't hink that doing some films in North is the greatest thing a film maker or a MD can do .
The reason for the failure of IR as a MD in north lies in the fact that his style of music is not apt for the Hindi style.
will u say that Yesudas is not good as he is not singing hindi songs??
sorry i am forced to stop here , we will continue later as time does not permit me
wishing to hear from u ,
with loving regards,
alex

I don't know why u always compare between ARR and IR.
let's go back to the topic.
I respect IR but...please IR fans JUST GET OUT OF THIS FORUM!!!!!
ARR IS NO 1 NOW!!!!!!!!
U think we should listen to dapangkutte music in this modern world.
We need change,man.
ARR is No1 now because he gave variety in his songs, different types of music not just dapangkutte as IR did.......

i don't know why you people ARR down for. Obliviously his talent has spread throughout the world that he has a done a song with Michael Jackson. And worked with Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. If you don't know them look em up.

All those who criticise IR, go listen to his music again. If you don't like IR, I think you love only dabbanguthu. He tuned innumerable no of bad songs. There are many I can't even listen to, but he also tuned plenty of wonderful songs. Some of his songs from 70's and 80's are still ringing in my ears. His music blended well with village atmosphere shown in some Tamil films. But of course the credit goes to the singers also for their crystal clear voices and melody.
I have nothing against ARR. Even if he copies, he Indianises them well to suit our tastes and the end result is worth hearing. Like the Chinese food available in India!! The bg music he gives in films and film songs are soooo gooooood, atleast to my taste. They do seem to have a touch of Western music though. So what if it is Western, shouldn't we love western music? I listen to ARR a lot in general.
But there are times when ARR does a blatant copy. The other day, I was watching the movie Sister Act. There was a scene where Whoopi Goldberg is sitting near the gates of the convent. There was a guitar in her hands. (or in the hands of somebody else from the scene? I do not remember well. ) Then some tune is played out from the guitar every energetically. On listening to that, my immediate reaction was "Oh my God. I heard this somewhere....". It sounded so familiar but I couldn't connect it to anything. Then out of the blue, it struck me. It was exactly the opening music of Muthu's Kuluwalile, without the slightest modification!
But if you think copying is only for ARR or Deva, you are wrong. It has been present in Tamil films from the black and white days. There is this AM Raja's song from Aravalli - Chinna pennaana pothile..... which is a plagiarised tune of some English or French song. I am not a connoisseur of foreign music so these are the very few instances I am aware of!!! Who knows how many more there are! If I like it, I listen. That's all.

In Arawalli film A.M.Raja coppied the tune of the
The song -Chinnapenaana pothile.... That tune was a copy of of the song in English -
Tell sara sara say what shall I will be. Tell sara sara. When I was a little girl I asked mother what shall I will be......... the rest I forget, I am sorry

Tell Sara Sara
Say what shall I will be will be.
Tell Sara Sara.
When I was a little girl I asked my mother
What shall I will be will. Will I be happy will I be rich. Tell Sara Sara.
The song goes like that. Sixty six years ago when I was 18 years old I used to sing this song in parties. Blame my forgetfullness I an unable to give the complete song now.
