I think manirahtnam started his career sometime in mid eithties (pagal nilavu?). Now it is 2004. He still has the potential and it is worth investing on him. Whereas KB, Bagyaraj, Bharathiraja, Mahendran etc were great directors but they could not last that long. Nobody would take any risk hiring them as a director to the film today. So, Manirathnam survived for two decades as of now. It still looks like he just started. He would be the best one among all. He brings out novelty, fame and entertainment to Tamil cinema. Moreover it looks to me he still has lot of potentials.
Mani!!! You stand top (first) in my list though I dislike you most ;-))))

One exception I would like to take in that list is KB. Because KB still manged to be a "top drawer stuff" director for 2-1/2 decades (mid- 60's through late-80's). Just during the dawn of the 90's was the slide of KB as he got succumbed to the growing stature of Mani ratnam, one of the rarely brilliant directors Tamil cinema has produced till date! KB had substance but Mani had both substance & technology! Technology driven Mani got the better of the "drama back ground" KB. KB's movies were more of a "family drama" genre (understandable because he comes from drama back-ground) which really doesn't neccassarily required myriad camera angles. One good thing about him is took lot of movies revolving around characters that had women as a lead!

However, I would rate Mani Ratnam as the my favorite director because Mani clearly showed that cinema abd drama are totally different ball games without fully resorting to "clichedness" or escapism. Mani is my favorite and KB is the second best to me.
