We cannot single out a best director. Styajit Ray, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Shyam Benegal and Aravindan are definitely among the best directors in Indian Cinema. And there are many others too

I think Mani is the best director in India who has the knack of bridging the gap between art and commercial cinema ie bringing meaningful films which are appreciated by the masses and classes.
Also there are some directors in Kerala like JAYRAJ,FAZIL,SRINIVASAN,Late Bharatan and Padmarajan who have and had successfuly merged the two styles.

Give it to Ratnam. The gem of Indian cinema who uses nuances sensitively to bring out the issue is a soft majestic way.Right from the opening scene of "Nayagan"...to Jaihind scene of "Roja"(even when I type this I feel as an Indian...to The political frienship in "Iruvar" and to the recording studio scene in "Uyire"...He is the Best of The best.Lets just wait for "Alai Payuthey".and lets hope for another "mouna ragam" of MANI RATNAM

I would rate Satyajit Ray as the best in India. Mahendran (of uthiripookal) for Tamil movies.

Maniratnam is not so good but the cameras he uses are good, I think Kamala hassan is the best innovative director in INDIA(the whole Country) because he had shown some good skills and added a thrill to the entertainment industry,Maniratnam is monotonous UNinnovative and Useless.
One other Telugu director Dasari Narayana Rao has been directing very good films. Like to check your views soon.

sibi malayil directed 'kireedam' possibly the best film ever made in india.

Sridhar, K.Balachander, Beem Singh, Bharathiraja,Balu Mahendra.....
I saw a Malayalam movie by Sibi Malayil about the inquisition of a girl by the Namboothris after she becomes pregnant with the child of a Kathakali dancer. Forgot the title, but that movie deserves to win the best film at Cannes.
Satyagit Ray is still the best Indian director as he is acclaimed not only in India but worldwide.

Mano,
I think you are referring to VAna Prastham, starring Mohanlal (who recently won a state award for the film) and Suhasini.
It also picked up a couple of National awards I think.

I think Maniratnam is brilliant , because he opens up so many possibilities and potential in his films. Always brings out the best from every member of his crew - actors ( Kamal, Arvindswamy, Manisha, Revathy, MohanLal ) to cinematographers ( Shriram, Santosh Sivan to Rajeev Menon ) to Music ( Ilayaraja and Rahman ) to editors ( Lenin-Vijayan ).
Always find his films thought-provoking and feel that he has potential to do better. Just hope that he would pay a little more attention to the STORY . That's important too !!!!

Mani Ratnam is the best director in India. He doesnt make dramatic or out of the world movies. Everything he takes has the element of practicality. Even the terrorist movies like Roja and Dil Se. There is definetely the practica;ity element which makes it an art film and mani adds his unusual love element touch which crosses the movie over to the commercial side. But everything is done in the unusual mani style. There are ither ood directors in Malayalam Bengali and stuff...but none have given as varied movies as mani has.

Maniratnam always believes in woman beauty. If heroin is not beauty, maniratnam movie is weightless. He uses females than his ideology. Yes
songs picturisation is pretty good.

Mani is too melodramatic. I agree he appeals to masses, but we cannot give him No. 1 position especially where there are maestros like Satyajith Ray, Shyam Benegal, Adoor Gopala Krishnan, Girish Kasaravalli, etc. Nope, Mani does not stand a chance !...don't be fanatic guys.

MY LIST OF MY TOP 5 DIRECTors(not in order of preference):
1)mani ratnam:the 1 guy in indian cinema who is able to blend visuals and narrative in such a lucid and poetic manner.always has the aid of great cinematographers and great music.there r inspirations from kurosawa to guru dutt in his movies.great shot taking techniques but a rather indifferent way of editing them.
2)sreenivasan:the guy has directed only 2 movies to date.but according to me he is the best writer of satire in the whole of india.both his movies(vadakkunokkiyantram, chintavishtayaya shyamala)have absolutely great dialogues and genuiely crafted funny moments.india's answer to james.l.brooks i guess.doesnot pay great attention to shot taking or visual finesse but as long as his movies r witty i dont care.
3)ram gopal verma:ok the guy doesnot ever work with a bound script.unbelievable to hear that his satya(the greatest indian movie i have seen to date)was made without a script>but thats ramu.trademark facets: the ability to surprise the viewer through the use of great cinematic moments.traces of coppola, scorsese and brian de palma can be seen in his movies.
4)farhan akhthar:must be wondering how i have this guy on my list when he has only 1 movie to his credit.it cos i believe he is destined for big things.dil chahta hai was the best debut film by an indian director ever, according to me.introduced a whole new cinematic grammer through the movie.even though the guys in the movie were rich they were absolutely realistically protrayed.
5)santosh sivan:great visuals, bernado berulucci and kurosawa .all in his movies.i believe he can do much better.wonderful use of the camera.the camera is almost a character in his films.
