Pavanar is one of the rare gems in the scene of comparative philology and etymology. Tamil grammarians divided words mainly into two categories, idukuRippeyar and karanappeyar.(also there is a third karana idukuRi.)
The meaning of “maNN” Áñ became apparent only after his research. We now know it is derived from “mann”Áý. An idukuRippeyar has become like a karanappeyar after his research had shown the derivation.

pakuththaLippavan, padiyaLappavan, kadavuL.
Aaathipakavan - Aakka kalan thottu pakuthtaLiththu padiaLappavan.
One who distributes to mankind his grace from the time of creation.
· Pakavan (derivation) was explained by Linguist DevaneyappavaaNar and used by Pulavar Kuzhanthai in his KuraL commentary.
ÀÌ - À¸× ( × - Ţ̾¢). ÀÌ - À¸× - À¸Åý.
À¸Åý > Bhagavaan (borrowed by Skrt).

contd.. No Tamil scholar had gone into etymology and comparative philology in extent and depth like Pavanar. Nallur Ngyanaprakasa Swamigal in 1932 (Sri Lanka)had done substantial research into etymology and is said to have published an etymological dictionary. Like many good books, that is also not available now. Tamil organisations should look into the matter and
republish that dictionary as well as some of Pavaanar's books so that Tamil writers and students can refer and learn. It appears that some present day authors of grammar books have also not read such books, making the mistakes that have already been pointed out by these geniuses.

Hello Tamil friends and families
I am writting this email from Manchester, UK. Originally I am from Gomathimuthupuram, near Sankarankovil, Tirunelvelli (D.T) This small remote village in Tamilnadu is a proud village in the world because it has produced one of the most outstanding Tamil scholar (Devaneyyapavanar born and brought up in this village) of our generation.
"Pavanar is one of the rare gems in the scene of comparative philosophy and etymology" is indeed very true. He has contributed a lot to Tamilnadu and particularly to Tamil scholarly and literary world through his scholarly research and writings.
Now Tamil language has been accepted by the Central govt as one of the fine classical languages. Tamil language gains more respect around the world.
But memories and contribution of Pavanar is slowly and systematically eroding and fading away from the minds of younger generations.
His (Pavanar) villagers (Gomathimuthupuram) are longing to erect his statue and also to build a memorial building with library facility. During his 100 birth anniversary function On 05.02.2002 MR.Thambydurai, the then education minister, district collector, MLAs and other govt officers were visited the village Gomathimuthupuram, and promised the villagers that a memorail building will be established for Pavanar. But nothing has been done since then.
Local villagers have established "MOZHIGNAYYARU DEIVANEYYA PAVANAR THIRU KURAL TAMIL MANTRAM" under the guidance and leadership of Mr. M. Abraham who is a retired Tamil teacher, writer. Through this mantram, they have decided to build a memorial centre for Pavanar. They have got a piece of land but struggling to raise money to establish Pavar's statue and memorial building. Those who would like to support this work plese do the needful. Your support is highly appreciated.
