Thappu is an instrument used in South India.
The thappu in Andhra is a lil bit bigger than that of TN.
If not neyyandi melam, thappu along with other parai instruments are the preferred instruments for functions. Usually Dalits play the drums.
In Kerala, thappu is used only in Puliaattam, and a dance called "Thappumelakali" (Thappattam in TN), other parai instruments like Tappatai are used as well.

Sanjiven,
I don't know how far back, but the south Indian thappu with sticks probably been around for a couple centuries maybe. It is more dominant in TN and Andhra, Kerala uses it only for certain dances and processions.
