I initially thought of starting a thread on "Cauvery issue" and wanted to start some useful discussions on ways to solve the problem. But "Thani prachanai" is not just limited to TN and Karnataka. There are states like Andhra, Rajastan, MP etc., which are dry for most of the year whereas Bihar, Orissa, UP etc., are over flooded. The problem is unattended for the past 50 yrs. This is the time to think of it seriously.
Right from Bharathiyar's period to Dr.M.S.Udayamurthy now, there are lot of people who are dreaming for "Nationalisation of rivers". Though heard of Dr.MSU's opinion many times on that, only recently I had an opportunity to go through his entire book. Seems that his vision is quite possible to achieve. (Only if our politicians are willing to hear). And the cost involved for this project as per his calculation also seems to be less that the sum of money that our politicians managed to earn thru scams so far!!!.
Are there any feasibility study conducted for this project? If so what are the reports and recommedations on it. I wish everyone to contribute whatever they know about this issue.

I still think why Indira Gandhi who nationalised all banks didn't nationalise all rivers. It probably won't bring her votes. And that's why nobody does it either.

I am currently studying Economics at Strathclyde University & I am desperately trying to find out more information about the following policy approach that deals with the natural monopoly problem; nationalisation. If possible could you please evaluate the effectiveness of this and how well it deals with the problem. Even if you could provide me with a definition, I would be gratefull. The more information the better. Thanks for your co-operation & understanding, hope to hear from you soon.

I at times think Karnataka and TamilNadu, as separate countries would have handled the Cauvery issue more deftly than as neighbouring states within the same union. Such is the deadlock. I think nationalization of rivers will be as much a utopia even after 50 years. First let's see if India remains as one, then we'll talk of what to nationalize.

Water is not only elixer for life but elixer for life. The only solution if humanity want to survive is through nationalising rivers(out of political interference).

Water Scarcity problem is mainly due to the Government Failure because not enforcing Property Rights.
If TamilNadu and Karnataka (or anyone) had equal Riparian Water Rights, its upto the Institutions to enforce the Rights.
And will you stop your pumpset if your electrcity was free? thats what happening in our villages, more than necessary water is wasted.
Free Electrcity = Water Wastage .
There is no rational use of water. It will be, when it is priced.
There is no need to panic, Fresh water resources are only 3% and of that 2% are in Icecaps. Rest 97% is for free use .Already we have the neccesary technology from BARC (if you dont know it is Bhaba Atomic Research Centre) to desalinate water at 3 paise per litre with not so high capital costs.
Only if Free People and Free Markets are allowed and there is end to Govt. Interference and Dominace and Dependance we can have better future.
And Nationalisation Sucks . You might not know, ASK you father how good the Nationalised banks were. How well they give loans... service ....
Do you know WHY while opening an account
You are asked to be introduced by SOMEBODY
to GIVE YOUR MONEY to THEM ???
There are better solutions than the BIG govt.
1. Learn Economics (Not the Socialist S!@# they teach you in your school.)
2. Use CommonSense
3. Free your Mind.
if you think you are free now
you know nothing about Freedom
you don't know anythig about Tyranny!

Jayakamal,
You are right on the point of economics. Some people have this idea that you can waste once you don't pay for something never mind someone else has to pay. This is a wring idea when you look at the issue nationally, it brings down a country. Where water and electricity are included in the rent of some people, they feel they can abuse the water and electricity as much as they like. This is totally wrong. Similarly, if you go some where, whether its a hotel or anything of that sort, the same principles should apply.
But mind you, in some places, water like air, is something you never pay for. The reason is:- they are the two basic things for survival. But even then, it should not be abused.

Any waste for that matter is wrong whether you have something for free or paid a price or whether someone else is paying.

Nationalisation of rivers , will be considered as a "Braminical conspiracy" by our intellectuals and thinkers. so it may never work out.
