Can someone please explain to me what year are we in the Tamil calendar and also how we came about being in this year 5104 or 5105?

The Tamil calendar is a derivative of old Hindu Solar calendar and is sidereal, similar to Gregorian. Each year has a name in Tamil Calendar and this year (2003-2004) is called 'Subanu'. These names follow a 60-yr cycle, which means the 60th yr from now will again be Subanu.
Don't have much idea how and when these names developed, but pretty sure they were derived from Sanskrit (e.g., Subanu, Chitra Banu, Dharana).
