Talk on caste and our English-educated elite feel uneasy, get irritated, argumentative, explode in anger dubbing you prejudiced and finally dismiss you as a crackpot. They say they do not believe in caste, never ask anybody’s caste and insist that nothing is decided on caste. Put one single, simple question: “Did you marry within the caste?” The answer will be “Yes”, quickly followed by a supplementary: “that is the only time in my life that I observed caste”. He says this so proudly without realizing that this one caste-based action keeps the caste system alive. Such is the shallowness of these small minds that they cannot make out that caste is perpetuated through the institution of marriage. And if we see the matrimonial columns that fill up the Sunday pages in our prestigious English dailies read by these elites, we find that even American-trained doctors, computer kids, MBAs seek alliances within the caste. And yet these elites, who becomes furious when caste is in public, shamelessly stick to caste in private and yet maintain a hypocritical stance on India’s most important fact of life, caste – the be-all and end-all of India’s life. So much for Indian hypocrisy on caste. But not all Indians can be accused of this hypocrisy. This is the monopoly of mainly the English-speaking, urban-dwelling elite who fortunately are a microscopic minority.

Caste has survived in spite of more then 50 years of anti-caste campaign. In fact, it is going strong.

The time has come for the rulers of India to recognise caste and allow caste to decide India’s future.
