mAl = vishnu?

in 'vedam', the name 'vishnu' is one of the names of the sun (sUryan) who takes three steps across heaven - at sunrise, noon and sunset (trivikraman).
so how did mahAvishnu get all the attributes and status he has now as one of the great deities.

in the sangam literature, there is mention of lord mAl who has the characteristics of vishnu, kannan avatAram etc - with prefixes like tirumAl, perumAl etc, which nowadays we take to mean srIman nArAyana -
is the vishnu hindus worship nowadays really a transmutation of lord mAl of the thamil land?
