Hi,

I'm a Sri Lankan Tamil guy living in Toronto, Canada. I left Sri Lanka when I was a kid. So, don't know much about my roots. Here is a question that has been nagging me but could not find any academic answer. My parents are from one of the islands off the tip of Jaffna (calle analativu). I found out from my parents and from lot of Tamils that people from the other parts of jaffna don't respect or don't like to deal with people from the diffrent islands - especially when it comes to marriages. I met a Slankan Tamil girl ( a recent immigrant to Canada) and have been going out with her. She was telling me that she would not tell her relatives that my parents/my origins were in one of the islands asumably for fear of ridicule/looking down by her relatives...Why is this? SOme of my friends told me that it is bcos the islands are economically backward and so the mainlanders looked down upon them! Is thsi true. Some others told me that the islanders are inherently cunning and easily deceive people. Any hisstorical reasons...like the islanders were recent immigrants from India to do tobaccco plantation. I read that the islanders were the first to leave Sri Lanka to the west and are pretty well established in the west - corrobarating my family's history...my parents came to the west in the late seventees. Your comments/thoughts will be much helpful
