A while ago someone wanted information about the panAr caste. There are lots of misconceptions about the panArs today thanks to the present day politicians who use them for vote banks.

Historically, the panars were the best singers. Amalanaadipiran a composition of Thirupan-Alwar is still sung today in Srirangam and by many many iyengar brahmins who regard thirupan-alwar as one of the 12 principle alwars.

Till date, panars are hereditary singers in Uraiyur near trichy and Srirangam.

BTW, only 3 out of the 12 alwars were brahmins. It is interesting to note that Madhurakavi who was a staunch brahmin, surrendered as a disciple to Nammalwar who was a vellAlar.
