Krishnasamy stopped from entering Madurai villages

By R. Ilangovan

MADURAI, MARCH 26. The Puthiya Tamizhagam leader, K. Krishnasamy, was today
prevented from entering the three reserved villages of Pappapatti,
Keeripatti and Nattamangalam in Madurai district where filing of
nominations for local bodies poll comes to a close tomorrow.

A strong mob attacked his convoy at Karumathur village while he was
returning to Madurai. A few of his men sustained minor injuries. The
windowpanes of three vehicles were also damaged. Caste Hindus of
Nattamangalam had, earlier, erected a barricade of iron rods and stones at
the village entrance to prevent Dr. Krishnasamy from coming in. A group of
villagers, armed with stones and sticks, blocked the entry.

Tension started building up when the police and revenue officials made the
Dalit leader to wait on the middle of the road for nearly two hours,
awaiting `clearance' from higher-ups for his visit to these villages. The
Usilampatti Revenue Divisional Officer came to the spot after an hour and
held discussions with Dr. Krishnasamy. He said as the villagers of
Pappapatti, Keeripatti and Nattmangalam had decided to file nominations
tomorrow, Dr. Krishnasamy's visit now would vitiate the atmosphere.

The police officials, citing law and order problems, stopped him at a
distance of about two kilometres from Nattamangalam. They claimed that his
visit would create a hostile atmosphere in these villages, dominated by
Piramalai Kallars. The situation in Nattamangalam, they said, was already
tense. The police also told the Dalit leader that they would not be in a
position to provide adequate security to him if he insisted on entering the
villages.

Dr. Krishnasamy accused the district officials of denying him the
fundamental right of visiting these villages. ``It was a shame on
democracy,'' he said. The police had never denied permission to enter
these villages when they were informed about his tour plan. But they failed
to provide him adequate security, he said, accusing the caste Hindus of
these villages of adopting a belligerent attitude. He said the Dalits in
these villages were living in perennial fear.

After nearly three hours of persuasion, he returned to Madurai without
entering these villages.

Earlier, in the morning, the District Collector, S. Ramachandran, visited
these villages and tried to convince the people to participate in the
democratic exercise.

He, however, left before Dr. Krishnasamy's arrival.

Meanwhile, no nomination had been received for the three village
panchayats, till today.
